Uncompromising design

Charlie Hedin, founder of Tekla, talks about the desire to create a combination of thought-provoking products and qualities that serve a genuine purpose for the world. Products where form follows function in order to provide timeless, practical and responsible textiles. Tekla was founded in 2017 with a vision to design the best home textiles that can influence the atmosphere and change the feel of your home environment.

The inspiration for Tekla textiles comes not from homes, but from spaces and structures. Tekla is about freedom, and functionality is what brings freedom. Living simple and uncluttered, living in a place with less but better furniture is what makes life more relaxed and what adds quality of life.

– I always considered my bed as a safe place when I was little and I still feel that way today - I let go of all the things in my head, what's happening at work, and other thoughts. I think people are starting to realise the essential role of our possessions that can improve our quality of life. Your bedroom is your own safe place and a reflection of who you are as a person. It is where you are at your most vulnerable and emotionally exposed stage.

The need to start Tekla came from a frustration with how difficult it was to find beautiful yet affordable home textiles. Charlie began developing the concept and idea while freelancing on the side for the first six months, but as it grew he decided to bring in investors and invest in Tekla full time.

– There came a time when it was no longer just about creating textiles for the home. It was about creating something that I felt I wanted to wear in my spare time or sleep in. Products that were functional but also beautiful.

Before Tekla, Charlie worked in global communications for Acne Studios. This has helped him to create, shape and realise his vision and dream of creating something of his own.

– Setting our visual identity was like making a reflection of my thoughts and who I am. It is a place where I can show what I want to do and the universe I want to create. To combine a refined and discreet design language with the best of today's materials for products that will stand the test of time in both quality and appearance. A combination of thought-provoking products and qualities that serve a genuine purpose for the world. We try to create things that are timeless, practical and responsible, and every part of our supply chain should reflect that.

Instead of relying on trends and releasing seasonal products to drive growth, Charlie wants to build Tekla around evolved highlights, which serve a genuine purpose in today's world and drive the industry towards a more responsible future. The all-encompassing feeling that is Tekla needs to be felt and understood on an international level. Currently, their focus is on launching a collection of sleepwear while being open to new markets and new potential partnerships. Launching new collections and expanding their markets has long been a focus. In May 2020, Tekla, among others, launched its products at Nordiska Galleriet.

– For me, Nordiska Galleriet has always been a leading institution when it comes to modern classic furniture, with a large selection of renowned international designers and suppliers. Therefore, I feel very honoured that Tekla becomes part of this community.

Large textile pieces hang from the ceiling in floating formations. In soft movements, they seem to be travelling somewhere in the room, away from their original position. When we meet Diana Orving, she is in a temporary studio outside Stockholm.
