Arne Jacobsen designed the Fritz Hansens Swan sofa in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel design project in Copenhagen. The rounded shell was produced using a process that was very technically advanced for its time, and Arne Jacobsen was the first to use this technique. The shell is made of polyurethane with fiberglass reinforcement, which is clad with cold foam for an extra durable structure. The sofa is available with fabric or leather upholstery in most colors. The base is made in shaker style from satin polished aluminum. The Swan is also available as a table lamp.
SAS Royal Hotel opened in 1960 as the world's leading design hotel, and Denmark's largest skyscraper. Arne Jacobsen's designs included the Swan, whose rounded, stylish shell was a visual contrast to the vertical and horizontal lines of the SAS Royal Hotel. Jacobsen handled the entire design concept down to the smallest detail, from the outdoor facade and the furniture to the cutlery in the restaurant. The SAS Royal Hotel has since come to be known as Jacobsen's work of art. Several Danish design icons were introduced here, putting Danish design on the world map.
