Meubelontwerper Bruno Mathsson werd geboren in Värnamo in 1907, als de vierde generatie in een familie van timmerlieden, en leerde het vak op jonge leeftijd. De timmerwerkplaats produceerde voornamelijk klassieke meubels, en Bruno Mathsson raakte al snel geïnteresseerd in de mogelijkheden van hout.
Hij begon zich snel te interesseren voor functionalistische idealen. Bruno Mathsson wordt door velen beschouwd als de grootste Zweedse ontwerper van de 20e eeuw. Zijn consequente focus op zitcomfort kan worden gezien als een van de redenen voor zijn bekendheid. Zijn eigen filosofie was dat meubels op een bepaalde manier gemaakt moeten worden voor gemakkelijk, comfortabel zitten.
