Sendai is an open bookcase designed in 2005 by Toyo Ito for the Italian furniture brand Horm. The piece, which is a combination of a bookcase and sculpture, sums up the essence of Toyo Ito's design idea. The Sendai Media Center in Japan, designed by Toyo Ito, is the basis and inspiration for the Sendai bookshelf. Like the media center, the stability of the bookcase is based on turned bars of solid alder and walnut wood treated with oil. These twenty-five rods run through the entire bookcase. They vary in diameter and differ in inclination and shape, making Sendai a captivating and elegant design. Sendai also consists of six shelves made of aluminum that have been given a mirror finish, which works very well in combination with the wood.
Toyo Ito is a Japanese architect known for concept buildings, in which he attempts to fuse physical and virtual worlds. Which is clearly seen in many of his works.
