The France Chair, or FJ 136 as it is also known, was designed in 1956 by Finn Juhl. The chair has the features that have become so characteristic of Finn Juhl's design; a seat and back that seem to float above the frame and the ergonomically designed armrests that are also found on the iconic 45 Chair. The chair is manufactured by House of Finn Juhl since 2016 and comes in either oak or walnut. For all variants, there is a choice of a hand-sewn fabric or leather cover.
The France Chair was originally developed in collaboration with furniture manufacturer France & Son for the US market. The chair was originally delivered in flat packs which required the customer to assemble it themselves. This was a big part of France & Son's business and enabled them, together with Finn Juhl, to achieve huge success in the American market. Today, however, the chair is delivered fully assembled.
