Arne Jacobsen designed Fritz Hansen’s Egg armchair in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel design project in Copenhagen. The rounded shell was produced using a process that was highly advanced for its time and which Arne Jacobsen was the first to use. The shell is made of polyurethane with a fiberglass reinforcement covered with cold foam for an extra durable structure. The egg is available with fabric or leather upholstery in a variety of colors. The rotating base is made of satin-polished steel and stands on a base of extruded aluminum. A steel tilting mechanism allows the armchair to be adjusted to the user's body weight. The egg can be complemented by the matching footrest for optimal comfort.
The egg stands out among the modern design classics; with its unique shape, the armchair makes its own mark on the room and takes its rightful place. The Egg is a design icon and a favorite in our collection. Jacobsen's design classic is not just an armchair, but living, contemporary design history that never goes out of time.
SAS Royal Hotel opened in 1960 and was the world's first design hotel, also Denmark's first skyscraper. Arne Jacobsen's interior design included the Egg, whose rounded, stylish shell provided a visual contrast to the hotel's vertical and horizontal lines. Jacobsen handled the entire design concept down to the smallest detail, from the outdoor facade and furniture to the cutlery in the restaurant. The SAS Royal Hotel has therefore come to be known as Jacobsen's work of art. Several Danish design icons were introduced and put Danish design on the world map.
