Arne Jacobsen's classic Ant chair was designed for Fritz Hansen in 1952 and created separately for the dining room of the Danish chemical company Novo Nordisk. The 3101 Ant is the four-legged model, while the 3100 has three legs. The seat and backrest are made using Jacobsen's innovative technique of molding nine layers of fan and two layers of Indian cotton into their original shape. This results in a comfortable seat and flexible back. Ant is available in a range of woods and colors, with a painted, clear lacquered or fully lacquered finish. A painted finish leaves the natural texture of the wood visible, making each chair unique. With a fully varnished finish, every chair is identical. The ant has bare legs and is stackable. If you would like to order a combination of seat and legs that we do not offer, please contact our customer service team for assistance.
Ant has made a big mark in Danish design history and has also laid the foundations for the popular Series 7 and Gran Prix chairs. But Ant was never even to be produced. When the sketches for the chair were presented, they were met with skepticism, but Jacobsen was so confident in his design that he promised Fritz Hansen that he would buy the chairs himself if no one else did. Fortunately, Jacobsen got his way. Ant was a success and today is a well-loved chair that has been launched in several variations.
