Arne Jacobsen's classic Ant chair was designed for Fritz Hansen in 1952 and created specifically for the dining room of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. 3101 Ant is the four-legged model, while 3100 has three legs. The seat and backrest are made using Jacobsen's innovative technique where nine layers of veneer and two layers of Indian cotton are molded over steam into their correct shape. This results in a comfortable seat and flexible back. Ant is available in a range of woods. The chair has neat chrome-plated steel legs and is stackable.
Ant has made a big mark in Danish design history and has also laid the foundations for the popular Series 7 and Gran Prix chairs. But Ant almost never went into production. When the sketches for the chair were presented, they were met with skepticism, but Jacobsen was so confident in his design that he promised Fritz Hansen he would buy the chairs himself if no one else did. Fortunately, Jacobsen was right. Ant was a success and is still a beloved chair today, launched in several variations.
