Enzo Catellani was born in Zibello just outside of Parma in the 1950s. At age 30, he designed the Turciú and Albero della Luce limited edition lamps, launching his career as a lamp designer.
The talented designer was discovered by German designers, and his lamps were introduced to the world’s leading contemporary design exhibitions. With their creative design idiom at the intersection of lighting and art, the lamps were an instant success, and in 1989 Enzo Catellani established the company Catellani & Smith.
The other half of the name comes from Logan Smith, a man who, according to Enzo Catellani, was a famous English racecourse architect. But it later emerged that this was also the name of Enzo Catellani’s horse. Catellani & Smith has become one of the world’s leading lighting brands. Since its inception, the brand has brought originality and elegance to homes around the world.
Exclusive, hand-made Italian lighting design
The classic Catellani & Smith design is in natural tones and materials; amber with charcoal, chrome with golden metal, and glass with white. The lamps represent modern Italian design and are at the intersection of lighting and art. The production is done by hand, which makes each piece unique. Catellani & Smith lighting is designed to create striking light and shade effects, making each lamp, regardless of size, a central part of the room’s decor. One of the brand's most popular products is the Fil De Fer, a spectacular globe of light with a structure of interlocking aluminum wire that, together with small points of light, spreads a dazzling glow across the room. Fil De Fer can be seen in both private homes and hotels around the world.
Despite Catellani & Smith’s modern design, there is nevertheless a classic shape that makes each designer lamp blend in and elevate the room it is in. Thanks to creativity, perseverance and a keen eye for shape, the brand is now one of the strongest in the market and continues to produce interesting works for both contemporary and classic homes.
