The design icon PK22 from Fritz Hansen was designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1956. The armchair was the breakthrough for Kjærholm's career on the international design scene after it won the Grand Prix at the world's premier design fair, the Triennale in Milan. When introduced, the armchair was an instant success. The seat and back are made in one piece and come fully upholstered in a choice of leather, suede, and canvas in various finishes. The seat rests on a thin base of curved, satin-brushed spring steel. PK22 is also available with a seat in wicker.
PK22 is an attractive and sophisticated armchair, an excellent example of Poul Kjærholm's talented craftsmanship. The design is based on Kjærholm's earlier graduation project, PK25, at the Kunsthåndvaerkerskolen in Copenhagen. Many similarities can be seen in the design expression. The armchair is a favorite with us at Nordiska Galleriet, much because of its dainty, stylish shape, and the incredibly elevated level of comfort. We like to decorate with PK22 in our exhibition together with Kjærholm's other classic furniture.
