The Egg armchair was designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen in 1958 for the design project with the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The rounded shell was manufactured using a technologically advanced process for its time that Arne Jacobsen was the first to use. The shell is made of polyurethane with a glass fiber reinforcement that is covered with cold foam for an extra durable structure. The Egg is available with fabric or leather upholstery in several colors. The rotatable base is made of satin-polished steel and stands on a foot of extruded aluminum. With the help of a steel tilt mechanism, the armchair can be adapted to the user's body weight. The Egg can be advantageously complemented by the matching footstool for optimal comfort.

SAS Royal Hotel opened in 1960 and was the world's first design hotel, also Denmark's first skyscraper. Arne Jacobsen decorated the hotel with, among other things, The Egg, whose rounded, elegant shell formed a visual contrast to the hotel's vertical and horizontal lines. Jacobsen was responsible for the full design concept down to the smallest detail, from the outdoor facade and the furniture to the cutlery in the restaurant. SAS Royal Hotel has therefore come to be called Jacobsen's work of art. Several Danish design icons were introduced and put Danish design on the world map.
