The elegant ceiling pendant A440 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1954 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. The pendant is a sister model to the Golden Bell, which was specially designed for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki by Aalto and his wife Aina. The lamp A440 has similar round shapes and soft lines, but differs in the current choice of materials. It is made of mouth-blown opal glass that is matt white, which gives a beautiful, diffused light that spreads across the room.
The A440 ceiling pendant is just as beautiful to have hung alone as it is in a group of several. It has become a popular feature in public spaces, especially in café and restaurant environments.
