Drop was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, especially for the Sas Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and produced by Fritz Hansen. Originally only 150 pieces were created, and it is only in later years that the Drop would be produced in larger quantities. But thanks to Jacobsen's timeless style, the design feels as relevant today as when it was launched. Drop is available in several versions, here with full upholstery in a wide range of fabrics and leathers.
The chair's stylish shell is made in one piece, from durable ABS plastic with nylon reinforcement on the inside. As the name suggests, the chair is drop-shaped, with a peaked top and rounded seat. The legs are neat and made of chromed steel tubes. For this upholstered version of the Drop, the seat is also upholstered with cold-pressed foam for softer comfort.
The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen opened in 1960 and is usually referred to as the world's first design hotel, also Denmark's first skyscraper. Arne Jacobsen's designs here included the Drop, whose softly rounded shell contrasted with the hotel's austere architecture. Jacobsen handled the full design concept down to the smallest detail, from the outdoor facade and furniture to the cutlery in the restaurant. The SAS Royal Hotel has therefore come to be known as Jacobsen's work of art. Several design icons were introduced and put Danish design on the world map. It is also said that the Drop was Jacobsen's favorite piece of furniture.
