Frank Gehry 1929
Frank Gehry was born in 1929 in Toronto, Canada, and moved to Los Angeles, USA, during his childhood. After studying at the University of Southern California and Harvard Graduate School of Design, Gehry established his own architectural firm in 1962. His early work was heavily influenced by modernism, but it was his experimental style in the 1970s that truly defined his career.
One of his most famous works is the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, which opened in 1997. This building, with its sweeping titanium panels and dynamic forms, has become a symbol of modern architecture and a testament to Gehry's ability to push the boundaries of traditional design.
Gehry's Architecture and Design for Vitra
Another prominent example of Gehry's unique architectural language is the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. The museum's main building is an architectural landmark and was Gehry's first project in Europe. The building is characterized by his deconstructivist style with playful shapes and irregular lines. The Vitra Campus also includes other architectural masterpieces by renowned architects such as Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, and Herzog & de Meuron.
Gehry also designed the Wiggle Side Chair in 1972 for Vitra, a chair that stands out with its innovative use of corrugated cardboard and organic curves, exemplifying his groundbreaking design philosophy. The Wiggle Side Chair is part of Frank Gehry's Easy Edges collection, which also includes the Wiggle Stool. With this series, Gehry managed to introduce a new aesthetic dimension to materials he considered everyday. The chair, made of corrugated cardboard with edges of natural hardboard, is a clear example of how Gehry transformed simple materials into functional artworks.
In addition to his groundbreaking buildings and furniture for Vitra, Gehry has also created furniture collections for Knoll and Heller Furniture. His works have also been featured in publications such as "Architectural Digest at 100 – A Century of Style." This book explores many different topics and provides insight into the private spaces of notable personalities such as Barack and Michelle Obama, David Bowie, and Diana Vreeland. It also includes works by prominent designers and architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Renzo Mongiardino, as well as beautiful photographs from well-known photographers. The book, along with "Architecture in the 20th Century" and many other titles, is available in Nordiska Galleriet's range.
