Maxalto
Maxalto is a collection of designer furniture for the company B&B Italia launched in 1975. The name Maxalto comes from Massa alto which means the highest and represents the company's ambitious goals and approach.
Maxalto is designed and coordinated entirely by Italian design icon Antonio Citterio, who hails from Meda, Italy. Citterio has won numerous design awards, including the highly prestigious Compasso d'Oro in both 1987 and 1995. B&B Italia, which owns Maxalto, is one of the world's foremost brands in the field of interior design.
World-famous Italian design by Citterio
Citterio creates classic furniture with clean and simple lines in timeless Italian design. During the 1980s and 1990s, he made major collaborations with the innovation company B&B Italia, putting them on the map as one of the world's leading design companies. Maxalto expresses craftsmanship of the highest quality together with advanced manufacturing processes. Many of Citterio's works can be found in prestigious museums. Some of his products are part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection in New York and exhibited at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris.
B&B Italia is a big part of Maxalto's history. The company revolutionised upholstered furniture when it started using injection-moulded polyurethane, creating design icons such as the UP! armchair and the Lombrico sofa, both designed by Gaiano Pesce. armchair and the Lombrico sofa, both designed by Gaetano Pesce. In 1969, Gaetano Pesce designs the UP! series, including the armchair of the same name. The series comprises seven pieces of furniture, including a sofa, armchair and stool, all of which have metaphorical forms from the female figure. The UP! furniture is designed in a modern form and is as comfortable to sit in as it is for the eye to rest on. B&B Italia won the Compasso d'oro, the most prestigious design award in Italy, four times between 1974 and 1989. Two of these are thanks to Antonio Citterio.
