Knoll
Knoll is a family-owned German company established by Wilhelm Knoll in 1865. High-quality design has been a pervasive concept since its inception. In the 1930s, Wilhelm Knoll’s grandson Hans and his wife Florence Knoll took over the company and modernized production.
Knoll’s designer furniture is imbued with influences from its roots in the creative and artistic 1920s and is used in private homes as well as offices. Collaborations with renowned designers and architects dating back over 75 years have given Knoll a solid selection of groundbreaking and creative furniture, textiles and accessories.
Barcelona chair and prominent collaborations
Florence Knoll was a pioneer of interior design, developing the vision of the modern office. Few other brands have managed to combine modern esthetics with smart home solutions in the same way as Knoll.
You will find a number of design classics in Knoll’s well-appointed range. Favorites such as the Wassily Lounge Chair, Barcelona Chair, Bertoia Diamond Chair, and Saarinen Tulip Side Chair are just some of the highlights. Knoll has had more than 40 pieces exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and collaborates with some of the world’s most prominent designers and architects. Well-established designers such as Mies van der Rohe, Warren Platner, Florence Knoll and Eero Saarinen are just some of the names.
One of Knoll’s most popular design classics is the Barcelona Chair. As one of the most iconic and celebrated designs of the 20th century, the chair does not need much of an introduction. The Barcelona Chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the late 1920s for the Spanish royal family and quickly became hugely popular. But the sketches for the Barcelona Chair first appeared alongside other furniture designs Mies van der Rohe was working on. Inspired by classical forms, the scissor-like shape of the design comes from historical finds from the Roman Empire, Greece, and Egypt as far back as 1500 BC. The shape is perceived as powerfully symbolic and becomes the underpinning of this beloved classic.
