The Grasshopper Chair was designed in 1938 by Finn Juhl and was shown in the cabinetmaker Niels Vodder's stand at the Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen. In 2019, the unique chair was launched by the House of Finn Juhl. The table has a frame in either oak or walnut with a cover in fabric or leather. The Grasshopper Chair was one of Finn Juhl's first attempts to express his artistic freedom through furniture. The chair would also become the first in a series of iconic furniture pieces created by Finn Juhl, making him one of the greatest in furniture design both nationally and internationally.
When the Grasshopper Chair was first presented in the late 1930s, the television chairs were displayed alongside a stark picture. Among the other exhibitors, heavy, and traditional furniture dominated, making Finn Juhl and Niels Vodder's stand really stand out with its more wavy and extravagant style. Despite this, visitors didn’t like or understand their furniture, resulting in Finn Juhl having to buy his own chairs to help Niels Vodder avoid major losses. Since then, the Grasshopper Chair has not seen the light of day. For now. It took almost 20 years of hard work for the House of Finn Juhl to create the chair because, despite its simplicity, it is extremely difficult to construct due to its tricky angles, joints, and complex shapes. By looking at Finn Juhl's original drawings and taking one of the two original chairs, they finally managed to recreate it as it was designed from the ground up.
