Chieftain Chair is one of Finn Juhl's absolute masterpieces and symbolizes the pinnacle of his career as a furniture designer. Launched in 1949, the iconic Chieftain Chair was to become one of the single most important pieces of furniture in the development of the Danish Modern movement in the United States in the 1950s. It is therefore no coincidence that Finn Juhl is often referred to as the father of modern Danish design.
Inspired by modern art, the Chieftain Chair was designed as a contrast to traditional Danish furniture design and strict functionalism in terms of form and function and materials. The armchair is made of walnut or oak and upholstered in leather. Unlike many of Finn Juhl's previous pieces of furniture, which have been very delicate in form, this is a stately chair that requires its space to come into its own.
In 2012, the Chieftain Chair was awarded the Danish Design Award, Classic. The jury's motivation was: "Today, the Chieftain Chair stands as an inspiration for a new generation of furniture designers and as proof that a focus on quality, international caliber, and the courage to break away from tradition can pave the way to making a difference as a designer". Since 2002, the Chieftain Chair has been in production by House of Finn Juhl and here at Nordiska Galleriet you will find the iconic armchair in several versions.
