The Kiulu seating furniture, created by the Japanese designer Koichi Futatsumata, is inspired by the traditional round containers often seen in communal bathhouses in both Japan and Finland. The name Kiulu is Finnish and refers to these containers, which also gave the name to the product. This bench is constructed with a sturdy solid birch frame, while the crescent-shaped storage compartments are made from shaped birch plywood. With these practical spaces, Kiulu offers not only a seat, but also smart storage for things such as magazines, headgear, gloves or children's toys. It is therefore an excellent choice for placement in everything from entrances to children's rooms and living rooms.
Koichi Futatsumata, born in 1975 in Kagoshima, Japan, is one of the initiators of the design agency Case Real, which today has operations in both Fukuoka and Tokyo and works in areas such as furniture design and architecture. Futatsumata's design work is part of the permanent collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and his work has been exhibited at, among others, the Design Museum in London and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
