The history of the venerable Cristel brand begins as early as 1806, when entrepreneur Frédéric Japy takes over a mill and a considerable amount of associated land. Within a few years, Japy revolutionised the manufacture of watches and clocks by introducing modern mechanical techniques, inventing machines and issuing patents. For most of the 19th century, the factory at Fesches-le-Châtel, under the direction of Frédéric and his three sons, produced everything from coffee grinders to garden furniture, to typewriters and kitchen equipment. In 1830, the first saucepan is produced in the company's factory.
