The classic Chair 68 was created by Alvar Aalto in 1935 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. Today it is an icon of the past and as modern now as it was then. The chair was originally designed for the library in Viipuri, Finland, after the designer won a competition to furnish and design the library. As well as designing the look of the building, he also designed lamps and interior accent pieces that still exist today, such as the 68 chairs.
Unlike many of the architect's other chairs, the frame of the chair has a wide base to create greater stability and function. As in many of Alvar Aalto's other works, his signature is clearly visible in the slightly curved legs in an L.
Chair 68 is made of molded beech and is available in clear lacquered beech with several seats, as well as all-white or black lacquer.
