The classic 401 armchair was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. It was only in the 1960-70s that Artek put the armchair into production. Like many of Aalto's furniture pieces, it is distinguished by an L-shaped design. To bend the legs, a piece of straight solid birch is cut in the direction of the fibers to form its distinctive silhouette. Thin pieces of plywood are later glued together, and it is this structure that allows the wood to be bent or steamed to its desired angle. When it later dries, the frame has an extremely strong texture.
The frame, which comes in molded natural birch, is available in a plethora of variations such as silver birch, honey stained birch, walnut stained birch, black stained birch, and gray stained birch. When it comes to upholstery, there are a variety of variations to choose from as well as beautiful colos. For requests on finishes, please contact the store and we will help you.
