Akari 1AY is a fairly small table lamp. It is made of white shoji paper and handmade with a frame of steel. The shape is organic with soft curves that contrast with three straight black steel legs. The luminaire is imaginatively painted with abstract patterns in orange, giving Akari 1AY a curious character.Akari is a range of luminaires designed by Japanese-American sculptor, architect, and designer Isamu Noguchi in 1951. Noguchi's work is artistically linked to abstract expressionism, and his design style was to have a major influence on 1950s design. The Akari lighting range was created by Noguchi with inspiration drawn from traditional Japanese design. The range consists of more than 100 luminaires in total and includes floor, table, and ceiling lamps. All Noguchi light sculptures are made of shoji paper made from the bark of mulberry trees. The material provides a soft and evocative glow.
