Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen 1902 – 1971

Arne Jacobsen, born in Copenhagen in 1902, is an iconic figure in Danish design history. He contributed to the worldwide spread of Danish design in the 20th century, emphasizing the role of functionalism. In the 1930s, he began a successful collaboration with Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen. Through his work designing and furnishing the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in the late 1950s, his name became internationally recognized. In connection with this assignment, he designed iconic furniture such as the Egg, the Series 7, the Swan, the 3300 series and the AJ lamps. He is also responsible for the well-known Ant chair. Even after his passing, his legacy continues to be celebrated, including the Series 7 chair – which remains popular worldwide.

Ant – Fritz Hansen

Ant – a cherished icon

One of Fritz Hansen's most famous chairs is the Ant, designed by Jacobsen in 1952 and the forerunner of the Series 7 and Grand Prix. Characterized by its organic shapes and reminiscent of a musical instrument, this flexible, sleek chair is made from nine layers of veneer and two layers of Indian cotton. Thanks to its minimalist and elegant silhouette, the chair fits into many different interiors and is still beloved worldwide – over 70 years later. The chair is available with three or four legs and comes in a variety of colors and woods.

Series 7 – a successful follow-up

Arne Jacobsen's influence on Fritz Hansen's collection of chairs continues with the legendary Seven. Designed in 1955 as a further development of the Ant, the chair has since been a symbol of Danish design at an international level. The thin shell and flexible backrest are due to the same manufacturing process as its predecessor, which contributes to high comfort. The Series 7 has chrome-plated legs and is available in a variety of woods and colors, and the seat can also be chosen in either a front-covered or fully upholstered version. The chair is also available as an armchair, bar stool and office chair.

Grand Prix – Fritz Hansen

Grand Prix – an award-winning classic

The Grand Prix chair is yet another example of the successful collaboration between Fritz Hansen and Arne Jacobsen. Launched in 1957, it won the prestigious award of the same name at the Milan Triennale the same year. With its elegant and ergonomic shape, the chair is not only beautiful to look at, but also comfortable to sit in for long periods. The chair, just like Ant and Series 7, is made of one-piece molded veneer with unique and comfortable flexibility that allows the backrest to be tilted. The chair is manufactured with chromed legs and can be chosen in wood, fabric or leather. It is also offered in the form of a leather upholstered office chair with a height-adjustable base on castors.

PK25 and PK22 – two of the many iconic armchairs

Fritz Hansen's collaboration with Poul Kjærholm resulted in some of the most iconic pieces of furniture in Danish design – including the PK25 and PK22 chairs. With their minimalist yet distinctive design language, the chairs have become the face of Danish modernism. PK25

PK25, also known as The Element Chair, is one of many chairs from the PK series designed by Kjærholm as part of his final thesis in 1952. The chair, along with his other pieces, is inspired by industrial forms and materials. The stripped-down look comes from the idea of using a whole piece of each material in his design. This version consists of a steel frame with a matte chrome finish, and the seat and backrest are available in two shades consisting of linen and nylon wrapped around the frame. PK25 is a forerunner of icons such as PK22.

Fritz Hansen's chairs, created in collaboration with design icons such as Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm, represent the forefront of Danish modernist and functional design. Chairs that are not just furniture, but genuine works of art that enrich any space wherever they are installed. With uncompromising quality and timeless aesthetics, Fritz Hansen chairs are an investment in both style and comfort that will impress for generations to come.

In Scandinavia, we are used to the fact that there are several flexible shelving systems and storage solutions to choose from, where different parts can be used to customise something that covers all everyday needs. Many people have grown up with shelving systems such as String or Elfa, which have achieved their popularity thanks to an extremely well thought-out design, good choice and relatively easy assembly. However, it is all the more difficult to get a shelving system to suit everyone's needs in terms of different styles, which therefore leaves plenty of room for competition.
