Exclusive launch of Pavilion

Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren form the Swedish design studio Front. Their work is based on joint discussions, investigations and experiments and they collaborate on all projects from the first ideas to the final product. Front's design objects often tell the viewer a story about the design process, the material they are made of, or the conventions of design.

In their work, they have left some of the design creation to animals, computers or machines. They have created ever-changing interiors, objects with explosions, robotic furniture and a range of furniture inspired by their fascination with magic. Front's work is represented at MoMA, Victoria & Albert Museum, M+, Nationalmuseum, Vitra Design Museum and Centre Pompidou.

We at NO-GA are pleased to exclusively present their latest collaboration with Kosta Boda - the Pavilion vase series. The six vases share a distinctive expression through their characteristic geometric interplay, yet are very different in form. They range from wide-ready to embrace sprawling bouquets, to narrow-perfect for a single flower or decorative sprig.

What is the inspiration behind the Pavilion?

The name Pavilion comes from the idea of "an architectural object among greenery", something that contributes to the arrangement of vegetation - like a pavilion does in a park. The inspiration behind Pavilion comes from the fact that there are many different types of flowers and that each flower requires a specific type of vase. The vases in the Pavilion series are podiums for flowers, allowing them to show their full splendour. The work with lines was present from the beginning of the design process. The play of lines gave the vases their graphic form and is also the common denominator. The Pavilion vases are individual but clearly belong together and interact with each other.

“Although the Pavilion is reminiscent of vegetation, all of the vases in the architectural series can stand alone without any flowers as well..”

The Pavilion series consists of seven vases in six different shapes, what characterises each vase?

All types of vegetation can be accommodated by Pavilion vases. From the first spring flower, to the twig found by the roadside or in the garden. Each Pavilion provides inspiration for the flowers that will live in the vase. The smaller vases are suitable for individual flowers, the wider vases for a large bouquet and the tall vase is designed for decorative sprigs or individual flowers that stand out. We also wanted to explore whether it was possible to create the perfect tulip vase, and the tulip vase became part of the Pavilion series. Although Pavilion is reminiscent of vegetation, all the vases in the architectural series can stand alone without flowers as well.

How did the cooperation with Kosta Boda start?

We were delighted when we were invited to work with Kosta Boda, which is really an important part of Swedish design history. It feels like a lot of exciting things are happening there right now with good energy and new initiatives. When Kosta Boda asked us to design a series of vases, we took as our starting point the history of the company and the iconic objects that the mill has made throughout history. The basic idea was to create a series that enhances and frames vegetation and inspires people to collect and surround themselves with nature.

What happens next?

The pavilion was created from graphic line drawings in pencil. When we started sketching, more and more variants were born, and in the end we had almost an entire city emerging. It is very exciting with Pavilion that we have such a broad base to build on together with Kosta Boda. We're looking forward to that in the coming seasons, new colours and shapes. We're also planning a new collection with Galerie Kreo in Paris, and a lot of other projects, but most of them are secret at the moment.
