Sven Lundh started Källemo in 1970, and more than forty years later the company continues to produce the same high-quality, trend-driven furniture.
The philosophy is based on the idea that quality is a broad concept that cannot be measured in the traditional sense. The most important building block is visual, long-lasting quality. Källemo creates furniture that conveys expression, and the ambition is to work with designers who are equally aware of quality as an immeasurable concept.
Källemo’s innovative collaborations began in 1981 with Jonas Bohlin’s degree project, “Concrete”, for Konstfack (Sweden’s largest university for arts, crafts and design). A concrete chair and sculpture are exhibited at the same time. The next real breakthrough came ten years later, this time with Mats Theselius and the limited edition “elk-leather lounge chair”. The chair is considered to be the starting point of modern furniture design in Sweden, and Theselius went on to design a number of other works for Källemo. These include the Aluminum Chair, Bruno, Ingo and the National Geographic cabinet. Theselius uses a mix of raw and elegant materials, such as plaster, leather, bark and superior woods. The result is Nordic elegance and modernity.
Källemo has enjoyed successful collaboration with a number of other designers, too, including Gunnar Asplund and Thomas Sandell. Källemo has been at the forefront of esthetics since the early 1970s, and among its unique works is the gold-leaf plexiglass A-Eki chair, designed by Sigurdur Gustafsson. A-Eki means “Watch out! Naughty!” in Icelandic, and only 19 originals of the chair exist.
The small Icelandic company is run today by Sven Lundh’s children, Karin and Erik. Källemo continues to operate in the same innovative spirit in a world where art and function meet in new ways. Esthetics are prized as much as durability. To this day, they create furniture which, according to Sven Lundh, “the eye will never tire of”.
