Founded in 1881, Iittala was a small glassworks in the small village of Iittala in Finland. Today, the design brand has grown into an internationally recognised brand with a significant role in defining the Nordic lifestyle. Iittala's roots reflect the brand's core values, which have resulted in balanced, progressive and essential design. Today, Iittala's glasses are still made in the place where it all began, the Iittala glassworks.
Progressive Nordic design since 1881
The brand started out making glass by blowing and pressing according to standard continental moulds. In the early 20th century, Iittala was one of the first in the world to move from more elegant dinnerware to porcelain that combined function and form with progressive Nordic design. However, the big breakthrough came in the 1930s and 1940s, in the early years of modernism and functionalism. Iconic design collaborations with pioneering designers such as Alvar and Aino Aalto, Kaj Franck and Tapio Wirkkala brought the brand to prominence and shaped the design philosophy that continues to this day.
Iittala creates objects that, through their progressive and functional yet aesthetically pleasing design, become timeless and true design classics that stay in style year after year.
