The modern and beautiful Kiki sofa was created by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1960 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. Tapiovaara was a furniture designer who wanted to design more affordable furniture for a larger mass. At first, he used materials that were already available in Finland in the 1940s, such as solid beech, but later in the 1950s he developed and experimented with multifunctional chairs in materials such as plywood and tubular steel. Ilmari Tapiovaara designed Kiki as early as 1960 and the series - which consists of a lounge chair, sofa, bench, and table - was originally designed as furniture for larger groups, such as an auditorium. In the Kiki collection, Tapiovaara created a cleaner form than what he had previously worked with, which was often organic shapes in softer solid materials. He used tubular steel as a structure and as a composite material throughout the Kiki series.
Kiki was a great success when the collection was launched, setting the tone for contemporary expression among furniture design during this period. The timelessness and elegance of the men's collection has made it one of the most popular collections ever in Finland - and today it is a classic feature in Nordic homes. The Kiki sofa comes with a frame in powder-coated black steel and has a seat and back made of polyurethane foam and polyester padding. The fabric cover above is Hallingdal 65 in the color Light Yellow 407. Of course, it is possible to get the cover in a variety of qualities and colors.
