Oluce
Oluce was founded back in 1945 by Giuseppe Ostuni and is considered to be Italy’s oldest manufacturer and producer of designer lamps. Since its inception, Oluce has collaborated with countless outstanding designers, resulting in a long list of classics and prestigious awards. Oluce has also participated in some spectacular exhibitions.
But it was thanks to the collaboration with Joe and Gianni Colombo that Oluce became increasingly revolutionary in its style. Perhaps Joe Colombo’s most famous work for Oluce is the Coupé lamp, now on display at MoMA in New York. In 1968, Coupé received the coveted International Design Award from the American Institute of Interior Designers in Chicago.
Attracting talented young designers from around the world
Oluce’s many collaborations include Sebastian Bergne, Tito Agnoli, Marta Laudani & Marco Romanelli, and Harri Koskinen, among others. One of Oluce’s classics is Sonora, designed by Vico Magistretti. The hemispherical lamp is available today in many different sizes and shapes, and the original was already created in 1976. Magistretti also designed the Atollo table lamp. Two years later, Magistretti received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award for Atollo. It quickly found its natural place at the top of the world’s largest design museum. The Spider 3319 floor lamp by Joe Colombo is also considered epoch-making for its time. Spider’s lacquered metal base combined with its chrome-plated stem and adjustable reflector make it a design classic and it is as modern today as it was then.
This is just one example of what Oluce has contributed over the years as one of the leaders in the design and production of first-class luminaires. Today, Oluce attracts young designers from all over the world. A clear proof of the constant appeal of the brand is that Oki Sato, one of Japan’s most brilliant young designers, designs for Oluce. He has designed Switch and Sorane, for example. Both are clear examples of modern design at its best.
