Bond from Fogia
In Scandinavia, we are used to the fact that there are several flexible shelving systems and storage solutions to choose from, where different parts can be used to customise something that covers all everyday needs. Many people have grown up with shelving systems such as String or Elfa, which have achieved their popularity thanks to an extremely well thought-out design, good choice and relatively easy assembly. However, it is all the more difficult to get a shelving system to suit everyone's needs in terms of different styles, which therefore leaves plenty of room for competition.
The Swedish furniture manufacturer Fogia saw a gap to fill with a shelving system that is based on very few parts, and at the same time has its own design language. The shelf system is perfect for those who like to stick to natural materials, as you can choose all parts in either walnut, oak or ash.
The Bond shelving system has many uses
However, it is not only the design and materials that make Bond a good shelving system. The whole idea is that the shelving system can be built based on your existing floor plan and interior design. A simple example is how you can leave a free space in the centre of a large bookcase to neatly frame your TV.
Tip: If you plan to use Bond as a bookcase next to a wall, consider ceiling or wall mounting instead of placing it directly on the floor. This will give the shelf a floating and slightly lighter look, while providing easy access to the vacuum cleaner underneath. Wall mounting is also perfect in rooms with stucco ceilings.
One obstacle that you can't always do much about, at least not without a handyman, is the placement of doors in your home. Bond is a great solution for this, as you can easily build around a doorway. This also works, of course, around a window or other obstacles, provided you have enough space above it.
If you have an open space between the kitchen and the living room – perhaps with a kitchen island – it is ideal to hang the Bond shelf from the ceiling. This gives you space for kitchen appliances, bowls and other accessories. At the same time, the kitchen is somewhat screened off, without feeling closed in. Because who said a room divider had to be on the floor?
Although thoughts and ideas can easily run wild when imagining the possibilities of the Bond shelving system, it's important to remember that it doesn't only work in large, grandiose living rooms. You could, for example, install a ceiling-mounted, neat little shelf in the kitchenette if you live in a smaller space.
One of our own favourite ways to use the Bond shelving system in a sofa group is to leave a space for a large painting. This provides plenty of space for ornaments, smaller lamps, books and plants - while allowing the art to get the attention it deserves.
Tip: When building a larger shelf system, use round rods at both heights. This gives a more dynamic and vibrant feel because the shelves don't come in a completely predictable pattern.
Usually, one always imagines a free-standing bookcase next to a wall, but even here the Bond shelving system defies the limitations. A floor-mounted version of the shelving system works great as a room divider in the spacious home as well as in public spaces, nicely delineating different environments while maintaining the airiness of the entire room. Likewise, it is an excellent alternative to a railing, for example, in places where there are floors or differences in level.
If you plan to decorate your home office with a Bond shelf, it may be a good idea to mount a ceiling-mounted model a few centimetres from the wall, space permitting. This makes it easier to place binders on the shelf with good stability, as the depth of the shelves is only 20 centimetres. A normal binder is usually about 25 centimetres. Hanging the shelf a few centimetres from the wall also gives a more airy expression with a more free-hanging feeling - something that also works perfectly in the living room, for example.
Few parts - great possibilities
The name Bond comes from the way the parts of the shelving system "bond" together, without any tools. Both sides of the shelves have a narrower part that allows you to smoothly place one shelf over another and then insert the stop screw through the hole, which is then attached directly to the rods. There is also a shorter section that acts as a finisher, which follows exactly the same principle.
Parts of the shelving system
Shelf
End of shelf
Round rods 10, 25 and 35 cm
End for round rods
Wall bracket
Stop screw
Screw 6 mm M6 (only for wall and ceiling mounting)
The round rods that determine the distance between shelves are available in a height of 25 or 35 centimetres. Each horizontal row must have the same height. However, if you leave an opening in the centre of the shelf, you can of course build different heights on each side. The shortest 10 cm round bar is only used for floor-mounted shelves and is the first part to be in contact with the floor.
Although the shelving system comes with great possibilities, there are of course also some limitations. For the ceiling-mounted version of Bond, you can only have one section overhanging without the use of wall brackets. This is especially good to know if you plan to hang the shelf a few centimetres from the wall.
Wall brackets are also a requirement when building shelving systems higher than six shelves, whether it is a ceiling-mounted or floor-mounted model. For wall-mounted shelves, wall brackets are always used, so you don't need to consider the number of shelves or width.
For your shelf to last a long time and avoid wear and tear, it is important not to overload it. The maximum weight per shelf is 10kg.
Please note: The shelving system is not designed to handle heavier weights or to be climbed on. If you have small children, it is therefore a very good idea to use wall brackets and completely avoid, for example, a higher floor-mounted Bond as a room divider.
