110 years of design history
From modern cars and antique furniture to the Danish era and Viva l'italia, Nordiska Galleriet has been the country's favourite destination for exclusive design for almost 110 years.
In 1912, a Scanian farmer's son named Anders Andersson builds a large and lavish property in the National Romantic style on the corner of Nybrogatan/Riddargatan. In the same year, the Auction Hall opens in the property's premises at Nybrogatan 11. Andersson intends to organise quality auctions for art and antique furniture, but the idea of auctions is scrapped and they switch to selling only high quality antique furniture. After a while, the store's large areas are supplemented with the sale of cars, which means that for a while modern cars and antique furniture are sold under the same roof - a perhaps somewhat odd combination.
In 1929, Anders Andersson's nephew Carl-Otto Heigard takes over the business and quickly replaces the cars and adds an art gallery to the furniture shop. To reflect the new focus of the company, he renamed it Nordiska Galleriet and the same year AB Nordiska Galleriet was registered. The same limited company still stands in the same place today.

The fifties began with the Danish era and a famous exhibition of furniture from designers such as Finn Juhl and Jörgen Höj - who also had the honour of redesigning the company's logo. The tradition of exhibitions continues and in 1967 Nordiska Galleriet holds the exhibition "Viva l'Italia" where brands such as Cassina and B&B Italia are seriously introduced in Sweden. And it is this innovative tastefulness that will characterise Nordiska Galleriet for decades to come.
In 2016, another era of modernisation of Nordiska Galleriet begins when Axel Söderberg acquires the company and makes the unique catalogue available online. With a new vision to save the world with design, Stockholm becomes the starting point for both national and international expansion. 2018 sees the launch of Nordiska Galleriet's first showroom in Gothenburg and 2021 sees the opening of e-commerce for our Norwegian neighbours. The ambition is to create a world-leading destination store for a design-loving audience, and today the iconic checkered floor is once again filled with avant-garde design from the world's most brilliant and recognised designers.
It is with pride that we look back on the past century, but above all with excitement that we look forward to what lies ahead.

In Scandinavia, we are used to the fact that there are several flexible shelving systems and storage solutions to choose from, where different parts can be used to customise something that covers all everyday needs. Many people have grown up with shelving systems such as String or Elfa, which have achieved their popularity thanks to an extremely well thought-out design, good choice and relatively easy assembly. However, it is all the more difficult to get a shelving system to suit everyone's needs in terms of different styles, which therefore leaves plenty of room for competition.
