What are avec glasses used for?

Avec takes its name from the French "du café avec le petit verre" which means coffee with the small glass. Avec is an excellent after-dinner drink and can include whiskey, liqueurs, rum, port, grappa, cognac or punch. These are drinks that are often served and are great with coffee. An avec glass is also suitable for a Martini or Sake and can also be used as a pre-drink if desired. Avec glasses usually hold about 2 cl.

Different avec glasses

Depending on the drink, there are different avec glasses to choose from with different shapes designed to bring out the best flavor and aroma of each drink. Most of the glasses are quite small as people tend to drink a fairly small amount of these drinks.

Grappa glasses

Grappa is served in a smaller glass with a round top. This means that you have to angle the glass quite a lot when drinking, which makes the drink far back in the mouth, which many believe gives a better taste experience.

Cognacs glasses

Cognac is best served in a so-called cognac cup, which has a rounded shape that enhances the flavors and aromas of the drink. Cognac cups often have a longer stem.

Sake glasses

If you are going to drink the rice-based Japanese drink sake, it is best to do so in a glass specially designed for this drink. A sake glass has a wide opening which also enhances the flavor and aroma when you drink from it.

Liqueur glasses

Liqueur is suitable for drinking from liqueur glasses which, unlike shot glasses, have a stem. Rum is also suitable for drinking from liqueur glasses or cognac glasses. Liqueur glasses are often smaller than cognac glasses.
