The Danish design agency New Works was established in 2012 as a subsidiary of the Belgian furniture company Roomstore. New Works launched its first collection at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan in 2013 with a small collection of furniture and lamps. At that time, the brand went by the name of Noevvorks, later changed to the more international-sounding New Works. From the start, the brand has distinguished itself by using natural materials and geometric shapes.
They produce products with an emphasis on functionality and find themselves firmly at the intersection of design and art.
Experimental design with natural materials
New Works’ first product was the Hang on Honey lamp, a pendant designed by Danish designer Niels Bak Rasmussen in which the light bulb works as part of the design with a shade that is hung directly on the lamp. New Works’ latest product line also includes international favorites such as the Tembo chair, the Köl coffee table and the Material pendant lamp. All are in production today.
In 2015, New Works became a global brand with Norwegian designer Knut Bendik Humlevik as creative director and designer Josephine Hedemann as head of production. The team embarked on an intensive process of developing a new visual identity and attracting a number of designers from across Scandinavia to create an interesting collection of furniture and furnishings. Among their many collaborations with renowned designers are names such as David Taylor, Rikke Frost and Anderssen & Voll, founders of Norwegian design agency Norway Says.
As of the start in 2012, the playful esthetic and love of raw natural materials was evident throughout all production. In 2015, fashion designer Malene Birger designed a number of textile products and candle holders for the brand. The collection was called Additional. In 2018, the largest and most ambitious product line to date was launched. Called Mass, it was developed by the Chinese design studio Lim + Lu. The range included 16 products that could be combined in a number of ways. The range included everything from daybeds, lounge chairs and modular sofas, to elegant, sophisticated furniture designed for modern living.
