Some rooms are harder than others to find the right lighting for. With the help of NO GA's Head Interior Designer Lisa Viberg, she will guide you in the right direction.
How to think when planning lighting in a room?
– The bigger the room, the more light sources, but all rooms should have at least three types of lights: general, task and mood lighting.
Let's take the home office as an example.
– Good general lighting can be achieved, for example, by hanging a lamp above the desk or using a floor lamp that provides a lot of light. Then choose a desk lamp with directional light that serves as the actual work light. A lamp with a dimmer is always preferable as it gives you more functions when working. Complement this with wall lighting, which provides both mood and function.
How best to light a bathroom?
– Think about having really strong lighting and be careful when choosing a lamp by the mirror. Here you want good lighting that does not give shadows. Also, make sure you choose the right dimmer and that the lamps are IP 44 rated if they are to be placed near water. It is also good to choose LED lighting with clear white light, preferably 5000-6000 Kelvin. If the color temperature is lower than 5000 Kelvin, the light becomes yellow or blue, which creates discoloration that results in, for example, the skin not being displayed correctly.
How should you think about the placement of the dining table?
– As a general rule, lamps should hang 65-75 centimetres above a dining table from the bottom of the lamp. If the lamps are placed too low, they risk obscuring the field of vision or dazzling those sitting at the table. If you have several light sources, it is a good idea to place them about 50-80 centimetres apart. Above a kitchen counter, place the lights higher, about 75-80 centimetres above the counter. For these, it is good to have a matt light source to avoid shadows when working.
How bright should the lights be?
– Blue or yellow light is not preferred in the home environment, and 400-700 lumens is a good guideline for general lighting. And again, choose a dimmable lamp so you can switch between work and cosy lighting.
Our bed is a place of relaxation, comfort, pleasure and rest; a place of recovery of various kinds. It is where we are at our most vulnerable, our most scattered and our most relaxed. It is also the place where we awaken and fall asleep. It is where we surrender and allow our consciousness to enter a dreamy state and then disappear into the shadowy world of the night.
