Charles & Ray Eames 1907/1912 - 1978/1988

Charles og Ray Eames var et amerikansk arkitekt- og designerpar, der var pionerer inden for båda-faget og i dag betragtes som moderne ikoner. Parret blev uddannet på Cranbrook Academy of Art, hvor de også stiftede bekendtskab med andre designlegender som Eero Saarinen.

Eames' vision af både design og arkitektur var meget moderne, og det er sandt at sige; Charles blev tvunget til at forlade Washington University, hvor han studerede, før han kom til Cranbrook, fordi, som en professor udtrykte det: "Hans synspunkter var for moderne". Charles Eames blev født i 1907 i St. Louis, Missouri, og hans interesse for teknik og arkitektur viste sig at være stor i hans tidlige år. Efter at være blevet tvunget til at forlade Washington University starter Charles sin egen arkitektvirksomhed i 1930, hvor han udforsker de grundlæggende principper for design, hvilket fører til en invitation til Cranbrook Academy of Art i Michigan. Charles' innovative design gjorde ham til sidst til chef for designafdelingen.

Ray Kaiser Eames blev født i 1912 i Sacramento, Californien. I sin ungdom studerede hun maleri i New York under Hans Hofmann. Senere kommer hun ind på Cranbrook Academy, hvor hun møder sin kommende mand Charles Eames og den kommende designer Eero Saarinen. Sammen skabte de tre kunst til Museum of Modern Art i New York. I 1949 giftede Charles og Ray sig og fortsatte med at skabe moderne møbeldesign sammen.

I 1948 tegnede parret et hus til sig selv, The Eames House, i Los Angeles, som i dag regnes for et af de vigtigste værker inden for moderne arkitektur. Parret har designet adskillige møbler, og Eames Lounge Chair fra 1956 anses nu for at være et af verdens måske mest berømte møbler. Andre fremtrædende værker omfatter Eames plastic Chair, Occasional Table, Eames Elephant og den legende Hang it All-pendel, som alle er produceret af Vitra. Charles og Ray Eames modtager adskillige hædersbevisninger i løbet af deres karriere, og i 1979 modtager de den prestigefyldte Royal Gold Medal fra Royal Institute of British Architects. Prisen er blevet uddelt til verdens mest indflydelsesrige arkitekter siden 1848. I 1985 modtog parret prisen The Most Influential Designer of the 20th Century fra Industrial Designers Society of America.
