The Abat-Jour Conique lampshade from Vitra was designed in 1947 by Jean Prouvé. The white screen was designed as an accessory to the Potence luminaire, which was designed a few years earlier. Abat-Jour Conique is shaped like a cone and gives a soft upward glow. The lamp shade is the first shade designed for Potence and also works for Petite Potence, the smaller size. The Abat-Jour Conique mounts over the bulb and can be easily removed to change the look of the fixture.
Jean Prouvé was born in 1901 in Paris and is one of the most influential designers and architects of the 20th century. Considered to have been a proponent of the modernist design movement, Prouvé began his career by apprenticing to various blacksmiths and metal furniture makers. Today, Vitra produces a number of Prouvé's popular pieces of furniture. These are considered timeless design icons and are as popular today as when they were designed.
