Nordic design happiness from Made by Choice

Furniture manufacturer Made by Choice describes their company with the phrase "Nordic Happiness". Happiness may not be what you usually associate with Nordic design, but hopefully that's exactly what you feel when you become the owner of their furniture: a little bit of Nordic design happiness. Finland is also said to have the happiest people in the world and Made by Choice makes sure to express that in their products.

From moon landing to multifunctional design

A clear example is the Kolho series by American designer and artist Matthew Day Jackson. On tables and seating, he has replaced the otherwise straight angles with serpentine-shaped legs. With roots in California and a base in New York, Matthew Day Jackson draws inspiration from the big questions, such as the evolution of the human mind or the trust we have in the advance of technology. Above all, he explores the myth of the American dream as a failed utopia.

Jackson drew inspiration for the Kohlo series from the American moon landing on the Apollo spacecraft. At the same time, the god Apollo inspired the chair seat, while the idea for the legs came from Apollo's wild brother Dionysus, and in between, the chair found its balance between chaos and order.

Also standing out is the Beebee box designed by Finnish product and interior designer Hanna Anonen. At first glance, it does not reveal what it is. With its shape inspired by a Fabergé egg and its distinctive colour, it easily passes as an art object. In fact, the top of the oval-shaped cup can be lifted off to reveal a hollow interior for storing items to hide or offer.

The Airisto furniture by Finnish interior architect and designer Joanna Laajisto, on the other hand, attracts attention with its distinctive stripped-down design. A series of tables that, in their simplicity, can just as easily be used as stools and benches without compromising the quality of the decor. They also give them even more uses and more opportunities for an extra-long life.

Long life cycles are also the aim of Made by Choice's way of welcoming the customer into production, turning traditional manufacturing models upside down.
