Create your own walk-in closet
The realisation of your own walk-in closet may be closer than you think. We spoke to Nordiska Galleriet's store manager Olga Vinidiktova who has guided many customers through Poliform's unique wardrobe solutions. Here she gives you tips on the most important things to consider when creating a fashion oasis at home.
Who hasn't dreamed of walking into a room where all your clothes and accessories are colour-coordinated on hangers and illuminated shelves. Maybe with a carpet and atmospheric lighting. The way to get there is through proper planning and choice of details. With just four square metres, you can have a personalised walk-in closet that does both you and your clothes justice. After all, Carrie Bradshaw's New York-based dressing room in Sex and the City, one of the most famous and well-stocked in the world, wasn't much bigger than that.
What should I start with?
- You start with a needs analysis to evaluate the conditions of the room in relation to its volume and the type of clothes to be stored there. Usually you also start by looking for inspirational images online to get an idea of the design and examples of different solutions in terms of materials and colours. You should also think about a reasonable budget for the project and then choose a supplier or type of storage system when it comes to wardrobe fittings.
A reputable Italian supplier like Poliform can offer various solutions for both open and closed storage. Together with Poliform, we focus on the customer's individual needs and wishes to customise a suitable solution. The combinations of materials and types of fittings are numerous enough to satisfy our customers' most demanding preferences - even a fashionista like Carrie Bradshaw would be envious.
How much space do I need?
- The bigger the room the better, but even four square metres can provide functional storage for two people.
How can I personalise my walk-in closet?
- For some, a vibrant colour or texture on a material surface can create an individual expression. For others, fine details such as attached handles, a display with a glass drawer for accessories, or optional drawer mats and leather wraps on clothes rails, are the icing on the cake.
What should I think about when it comes to lighting?
- Poliform makes it possible to integrate LED lighting behind a metal strip that protects you from being dazzled by the light, a very clever solution with attached LED strips. Usually, the lighting is placed parallel to clothes rails and directs the light towards hanging clothes, under shoe racks and towards bag storage areas. There is also a very elegant solution with shelves in tinted glass with an already integrated invisible LED profile.
I have many shoes - what is the best and most stylish solution for that?
- At Poliform, you can create a nice display with illuminated angled shoe racks that can compete with the decor of a fashion store. Everyday shoes can also be stored in special pull-out shoe boxes.
What are your top three tips for making a walk-in closet as successful as possible?
Reviewing your current volume of clothes, shoes, bags and accessories and thinking about future needs. Then prioritise and proportionally allocate wardrobe fittings for clothes that can be hung and folded and for clothes that can be left open or need to be stored in drawers and behind closed doors for better protection from dust and sunlight.
Think about lighting in the room in general and LED lighting that can be integrated into the wardrobe interior for both functional and decorative purposes. Light sets the mood and can provide the right "cool factor" for a true sense of luxury.
Thinking through the choice of materials and colours so that they are in harmony with the rest of the interior. If I have space, which piece of furniture is a must in a walk-in closet? - A free-standing dresser with drawers, a pouf or daybed, a dressing table or a large mirror are the most common additions that complete the room when it comes to wardrobe fittings.
