Baker Sofa is a sofa designed by Finn Juhl in 1951 and relaunched by House of Finn Juhl in 2009. The organic sofa with its round shapes is handcrafted with a wooden frame in either oak or walnut. The upholstery is entirely hand-sewn in fabric. The seat of the sofa has springs that guarantee maximum comfort and durability.
Baker Sofa was Finn Juhl's debut on the American market. With its distinctive two-piece backrest and sculptural shape, it was clear that Edgar Kaufmann Jr., a prominent art collector and head of the industrial design department at MoMA in New York, took a liking to Finn Juhl and his design. It was probably Kaufmann who introduced Finn Juhl to the American market. Among other things, he wrote an article in Interiors magazine about the Danish designer, which was picked up by furniture manufacturer Hollis Baker from Michigan. Hollis Baker offered Finn Juhl to design a collection of modern furniture for him. The result was this sofa, named Baker Sofa. The result was the beginning of a development that would later be called "Danish Modern", which started a boom for Danish design in the United States.
