Franco Albini 1905 – 1977
Franco Albini was born in 1905 in Robbiate, Italy, and trained as an architect at the Politecnico di Milano, graduating in 1929. Throughout his career, he developed a distinctive style that combined minimalist aesthetics with technical precision. His early work included several significant projects, including residential and public buildings, reflecting his preference for clean lines and functional solutions.
One of his first successful works was a radio encased in glass, Radio in Cristallo, from 1938, designed for the brand Cassina. Radio in Cristallo has been upgraded with Bluetooth functionality and WiFi connectivity, but retains the same dimensions as the original version. It is available in a limited series at Nordiska Galleriet, complete with a numbered metal plaque on the side, making it a highly sought-after collectible.
Among Albini's most famous works is his collaboration with Knoll, where he designed several iconic pieces of furniture. Among these is the elegant and timeless "Tre Pezzi" armchair, which is still highly appreciated for its simple yet sophisticated design. Another work from his collaboration with Knoll is the Albini Desk, a timeless, exclusive office desk that stylishly combines glass, steel, and wood. Albini's collaboration with Knoll helped cement his reputation as one of the leading designers within the modernist movement.
Albini was also involved in lighting design and collaborated with Nemo Lighting to create several groundbreaking lighting solutions. His designs for Nemo Lighting are characterized by a combination of simplicity and technical skill, resulting in products that are both practical and beautiful.
Franco Albini's influence extends far beyond his lifetime, and his work continues to inspire architects and designers worldwide. He passed away in 1977, but his legacy lives on through his iconic designs and his contributions to the development of modernism. Albini's works, from his furniture for Knoll and Cassina to his lighting designs for Nemo Lighting, are a testament to his vision and creativity.
