Founded in 1978 in Milan, Italy, Versace is today one of the world’s most prominent fashion houses and a symbol of Italian luxury throughout the world. Behind the legend was founder Gianni Versace, who chose to create the iconic logo in the shape of the head of Medusa, a figure from Greek mythology.

The inspiration for this came from ruins in the Reggio Calabria area where the siblings played as children. The choice of Medusa came from the fact that she made people fall in love with her and they were unable to find any way back, and Gianni hoped that his company would have the same effect on people who wear his creations. “I’m a little like Marco Polo, going around and mixing cultures,” Gianni Versace said as he explained what permeated his design style. Now the brand is under the creative direction of his sister Donatella Versace, who continues to drive the brand forward.

Strong, bold patterns that stretch beyond the decades

The brand has evolved from not only being the ultimate destination for clothes, to now also being also a lifestyle and home collection. This collection is imbued with strong and bold patterns that span decades while bringing together a vision of both classic and contemporary design. It is distinguished by prominent embellishments and clear Baroque influences, which often include the Medusa head. Versace has teamed up with porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal to create a collection that combines Versace’s sumptuous decorations with Rosenthal’s love of quality and simplicity of form. Together they have created plates, cups, bowls, and other porcelain items that stand the test of time with their enduring elegance.
