Virgil Abloh x Cassina
When Virgil Abloh passed away a year ago, he left behind a vast design legacy in fashion and contemporary culture. His last project was for the high-end Italian brand Cassina and resulted in Modular Imagination - a series of freestanding cubes that can be stacked together to form seating, tables and storage areas. As the only furniture store in the world, Nordiska Galleriet has been chosen to sell and display the collaboration with an in-store pop-up installation, starting on 3 November.
Modular blocks
Modular Imagination consists of two types of blocks that can be stacked and held together with small cylindrical feet. These two simple components can be used to build an almost infinite number of constellations, such as armchairs, benches and tables. Creative play was Virgil Abloh's signature. With strong colour contrasts and the placement of text on three-dimensional objects, he created a clear design language of a graphic nature.
Design elements of play
The collaboration with Cassina also uses colour codes and text as design elements, with 'Cassina-Abloh' embossed on the sides of the cubes, adding to the industrial aesthetic of the project. The building blocks are matte black and surprisingly soft thanks to a polyurethane upholstery with an internal frame made of recycled wood. The balance between hardness and softness means that they can be used as both seating and relief surfaces.
A creative multi-talent
A bright visionary, Virgil Abloh was perhaps best known as the founder of his own streetwear label Off-White and later as artistic director of the men's collections at Louis Vuitton. When Abloh was recruited by LVMH in 2018, he was the first African-American designer to reach such a position in the luxury segment.
Abloh's creativity and ability extended far beyond the borders of the fashion world. With a master's degree in architecture, he also designed album covers and was a musician and DJ. Inspiration came in equal parts from classical art and youth culture.
The last project
Modular Imagination was the last design Virgil Abloh was able to complete. The project was finalised just before his untimely death, but started in 2020.
The global launch takes place on 3 November and the collection will be available at a selection of the most famous fashion and design concept stores worldwide. This includes Nordiska Galleriet, which will also display the pop-up installation signed by Virgil Abloh in its store on Nybrogatan.

Many people have grown up with shelving systems such as String or Elfa, which have achieved their popularity thanks to an extremely well thought-out design, good choice and relatively easy assembly. However, it is all the more difficult to get a shelving system to suit everyone's needs in terms of different styles, which therefore leaves plenty of room for competition.

1940s design America belonged to the husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames, whose playful and experimental approach to design created a whole new topology of furniture in innovative materials. The couple also designed their home, a modernist gem in Pacific Palisades, with room for great personality.
