We welcome NINE

NINE brings together emerging and established European talent to create both confident and refined designs for modern environments.

The NINE team invited colleagues from the design industry's creative and commercial communities in London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm and beyond to participate in the creation of a new design brand.

The aim is to meet today's demands and establish a platform for talent and collaboration. This has led to a collection of furniture, lighting and home decor designed to be used and appreciated for years. NINE strives to apply efficient and responsible processes by using recycled and recyclable materials whenever possible.

Launch of NINE at the Nordic Gallery

The spotlight for the Swedish launch of NINE at Nordiska Galleriet is on SINE, the new outdoor furniture collection designed by Note (design studio). SINE is a response to a desire to spend more time together outdoors - a priority for many people in the midst of a hectic everyday life. Designing the collection was also an opportunity to explore how to increase the comfort, functionality and longevity of products intended for outdoor environments.

SINE is named after the flowing curves of the mathematical sine curve, which are reflected in the soft arc of the metal sheets. Although sturdy, the sheets exude a softness akin to textiles smoothly draped over the frame. Made of a continuous line, the frame not only gives an aesthetic impression, but also casts captivating shadows - creating an exciting interplay of light and form.

Inspired by classic Swedish outdoor furniture, SINE features a cantilevered stand that offers a comfortable lean and tilt, perfect for unwinding and savoring the moment. Emphasizing the tranquil nature of outdoor living, SINE invites relaxation and togetherness, whether at home or in a café. The collection consists of dining chairs, armchairs and lounge chairs complemented by a range of tables, benches and stools.

The design offers a modern interpretation of classic aesthetics with a fresh color palette, designed to blend into both natural and urban environments. The stackable chairs and flat-packed tables prioritize sustainability with simplified transport and storage. Made from stainless steel, the collection is built to last, with resistance to rust for lasting quality.

Meet the designers

Note (design studio) was founded by Johannes Carlström and Cristiano Pigazzini in 2008. Known for their collaborative spirit, the Stockholm-based collective is responsible for a wide range of design work spanning architecture, interiors, furniture and much more. As a multidisciplinary studio, Note (design studio) avoids a clear visual identity. However, functionality is at the heart of every creation. To find the right expression, proportions and materials for each object, it is imagined in a variety of environments and used for a range of needs. The deep commitment to function is enhanced by subtle details that elevate an everyday design to something extraordinary.

When we thought about which designers and studios we would like to work with at NINE, Note (design studio) was at the top of our list. Beyond a shared love of color and modernity, the fact that Note is also a collective really stuck out to us. Their multidisciplinary approach and international operations felt like a natural fit for our vision at NINE.

We met with Note (design studio) to reflect on their collaboration with SINE and the ideas and ambitions they share.

What made you want to explore the possibility of creating a collection for a brand new brand like NINE?

NINE felt like something different compared to other brands on the market. Youthful, sustainable and appealing - it felt forward-thinking and modern. It felt like a blank piece of paper in an exciting way. We were attracted by the opportunity to be part of a new company that was still finding its place in the world. The people who helped start NINE were already familiar to us, and we knew they had a lot of good experience already. This gave us a foundation of trust and an even stronger conviction in NINE's ability to succeed with its vision.

Describe the design story behind SINE. Where did the inspiration come from?

The scenario of how to use an outdoor collection was the starting point for us. Imagine a day off, sitting outside and enjoying the company of others. We wanted the chairs to be really comfortable, and that's when we started thinking about the cantilevered base with a relaxing flexibility. We wanted to challenge the hard feel of stainless steel and instead create a softer look. The curved metal plates holding the frame are inspired by a strip of leather, while the frame has a soft one-line curve.

Let's talk about color. Many industry colleagues admire you for your amazing sense of color. Tell us more about the palette of the SINE collection.

We wanted to get away from the classic black color and instead chose a soft, very dark brown/green color. It changes all the time depending on the light, which makes it rich and more interesting. We combined it with a crisp yellow color with green tones, reminiscent of ice cream - and last but not least, a warm grey color. The colors are chosen to go well with nature and greenery, but also fit well in a more urban environment.

As Note is a studio with many prominent creatives, what is the collaboration like in the design process?

We often try to use our multidisciplinary advantage. For each product design project, we have two architects as our internal review team. Their role is to provide a helicopter view and ensure that we design valuable products that bring something new to the market. The ability to ask silly questions and have open discussions is what sets our projects apart, in our opinion.

Our collaboration started with a dinner held at NOTE's design studio in Stockholm. Why was it important that the creative home, where the collection was designed and developed, was also the launch platform?

– It felt like a very fitting occasion to present the collection in the place where it was created, in NOTE's design studio in Stockholm - at the same time as the Stockholm Furniture Fair was on. It was a wonderful celebration of our collaboration, and a chance to present the collection in an intimate setting to important future partners like Nordiska Galleriet, together with all the creators from NOTE and colleagues from NINE.

And finally, how has it been working with NINE?

What we love about NINE as a brand is the collaboration. It's where we as designers and producers sync in a seamless way - and it makes the work extremely joyful and rewarding. The fact that the design discussion is always present contributes to a fantastic end result.
