Inspiring outdoor rooms: Yves Saint Laurent Jardin Majorelle

In 1980, fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent bought the colourful Jardin Majorelle garden in Marrakech, now a popular destination for design and architecture enthusiasts. The walled complex, created over forty years, was then, as now, a maze of criss-crossing paths, exotic plants and trees from the most remote parts of the world - but above all, boldly coloured Art Deco buildings by painter Jacques Majorelle.

In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent and his life partner Pierre Bergé arrived in Morocco and after that trip they returned to Marrakech a few times a year. Saint Laurent was inspired by the people, costumes, colours and the country's many cultures for his collections. This commitment eventually led to a desire to make a positive contribution to the country, and in 1980 this dream was realised when the Jardin Majorelle was put up for sale, allowing them to save the cultural heritage and collection that was in danger of being replaced by a hotel complex.

For many years I have found the Majorelle garden to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration and I have often dreamed of its unique colours. –Yves Saint Laurent

Today, the Jardin Majorelle houses not only a garden but also a museum, a shop and a café, where visitors can sit down on garden furniture by French company Fermob. The range, called Luxembourg, is made of aluminium and painted in the colour Cactus. They can be purchased as individual products or as a complete set.

In Scandinavia, we are used to the fact that there are several flexible shelving systems and storage solutions to choose from, where different parts can be used to customise something that covers all everyday needs. Many people have grown up with shelving systems such as String or Elfa, which have achieved their popularity thanks to an extremely well thought-out design, good choice and relatively easy assembly. However, it is all the more difficult to get a shelving system to suit everyone's needs in terms of different styles, which therefore leaves plenty of room for competition.
