Hang the lamp properly

Moving into a new home can be both fun and full of anticipation. Especially when it comes to furniture: will the dining table fit in the kitchen? What about the carpet in the living room? We provide tips on how to think about investing in new lighting for your home.

Which lamp should I put over the dining table?

There are different types of ceiling lights, each with different characteristics. A traditional pendant light that only shines downwards is the most classic, but spotlights are also used to direct the light more precisely. A third model that is exciting is more of a sculpture that gives you a piece of art above the dining table. Usually, this third variant is larger in size and therefore requires both some space and a larger table. If you have a dining table that is longer than 190 cm, we recommend having at least two lamps to ensure a more even illumination of the table. If you only hang one in the centre, the light will not reach the short sides of the table. There's no rule of thumb for how far apart several lamps should be, as it depends on their size and light distribution - but it's often more beautiful to leave more distance to the edges of the table than the distance between the lamps. It is best to test how the light falls on the table and aim for an optimal spread before drilling holes and hanging the lights.

If your table is shorter than 190 cm, it's still possible to have two lamps, but perhaps with a slightly smaller spread and size of lamp - but it's usually best to have one lamp with a good spread of light.

If you have a round table, it depends, as before, on its size. A small table of 90-120 cm should not have a lamp larger than 50 cm in diameter. Smaller table: smaller lamp. If the table is larger than 130 cm in diameter, you need to choose a lamp that is at least 60 cm in diameter. In these cases, a sculpture-like lamp is ideal.

How high should the lamp hang?

Our golden measure is 55 cm above the table top. If you have high ceilings and a tall family, you can go up to 60 cm. If you are short and have low ceilings, you can go down to 50 cm. The lamp should not hang higher than 60 cm from the table, with the exception of large chandeliers that can be hung where there is plenty of ceiling height and above a large round table. But even in that case, 60 cm may be too high - you'll have to experiment.

Why are these measures so finicky?

Well, there are three different scenarios that you need to consider:

If two people are sitting opposite each other at the table, the lamp should not obstruct the view - you want to be able to see the person you are talking to. In order to create harmony in the dining group (chairs, table and lamp), you should keep everything together just enough. Hanging the lamp too high will visually disrupt the balance.

Depending on the design of the lamp and the location of the light source, you don't want to look directly into a strong light source. Therefore, it should be hung at a height where you won't be dazzled by it.

Is there anything else to consider?

We always recommend installing a wall dimmer (by an authorised electrician). This way you can adjust the light and adapt it to your needs. Maybe you want a different light for a family dinner than you have for a cosy dinner for two? Don't forget to find out if the lamp is dimmable before you buy it. If you have paintings on the surrounding walls, we recommend that you illuminate them with spotlights so that you can direct the light onto the paintings - again, a dimmer is important to control the strength of the light. Last but not least - the lamp above the dining table isn't the only light in the room, is it? Don't forget to light up a corner or have a nice table lamp in the window or on a sideboard to balance the room.
