The super-lightweight 699 Superleggera chair from Cassina was created by Gió Ponti and put into production in 1957. The chair is called Superleggera, which in Italian means super light. The chair's frame is made of ash and comes in three finishes. Choose between natural ash, or black stained or white stained ash. The upholstered seat is available with fabric or leather upholstery.
Ponti wanted to make a chair that stood firmly without a traditional wooden cross between the legs. He believed that the fewer different elements a piece of furniture has, the more the chosen shapes come to the fore. The successful result was 699. With its simple wooden frame and straight lines, it was unique when it came onto the market and the chair has come to represent modern Italian design. Superleggera is a design favorite with us at Nordiska Galleriet. We like to decorate with the chair in our exhibition and let it stand for the skilled Italian craftsmanship we celebrate.
