Carlo Scarpa

Carlo Scarpa was an Italian architect and designer, known for his unique ability to blend tradition and modernity. His work is characterized by an exquisite sense of detail and material choice. Scarpa, best known for his innovative restorations and modernist buildings, has left a lasting mark on both architecture and design. 

Carlo Scarpa 1906 – 1978 

Carlo Scarpa was born in 1906 in Venice, Italy. After studying at the Venice Accademia di Belle Arti, he began his career in architecture and design. Despite never becoming a licensed architect, he gained recognition for his outstanding craftsmanship and ability to integrate historical and modern elements into his projects. His design philosophy was deeply rooted in respect for tradition and a passion for innovation, which is clearly reflected in his work. 

Scarpa often worked with materials such as concrete, wood, and glass, and his projects included everything from buildings to furniture. One of his most famous works is the restoration of the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, where his use of modern materials and techniques highlighted and preserved the historical heritage. Another significant project was his work on the Brion Cemetery in San Vito d'Altivole, a complex that uniquely combines architecture, art, and landscape. 

Scarpa and Cassina 

During his career, Carlo Scarpa collaborated with several prominent companies, including Cassina, an Italian furniture company known for its high-quality craftsmanship and innovative design. One of their most notable collaborations resulted in the W01 Doge, an iconic table designed by Scarpa for Cassina. Tobia Scarpa, Carlo's son, followed in his father's footsteps and became a prominent designer in his own right. One of Carlo Scarpa's last projects was Villa Palazzetto in Monselice, which was left unfinished at his death. In October 2006, on Scarpa's centenary, his son Tobia completed the changes to the villa. Tobia is known for his innovative furniture and architectural projects, and has also collaborated with Cassina, further strengthening the family's contribution to the design world.
