Philippe Starck 1949
Philippe Starck was born in 1949 in Paris and is a world-leading designer. Starck trained in interior design and design at the Parisian École Camondo. He became famous for later designing the private room of then French President François Mitterand at the Elysée Palace in 1983.
Soon after, Starck designed the Café Costes in Paris, which put him on the international map. As early as 1968, Starck founded his own design studio and has since collaborated with Pierre Cardin and Sir Norman Foster, among others.
Starck has designed everything from toothbrushes and chairs to hotels, restaurants, clothing and accessories, and has been awarded numerous prestigious prizes throughout his career. These include the Grand Prix National de la Création industrielle and the Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects. Starck's portfolio consists of more than 10,000 works, both unfinished and yet to be introduced, all created with a vision of offering design that makes life better for as many people as possible. Starck takes a humanistic and democratic approach to his life's work, emphasizing that what he creates must above all be useful things. He is particularly passionate about lighting design and has said that light plays the same role for him as words do for a writer, without light nothing is possible. Starck is responsible for many of the luminaires from Flos such as the Romeo, Rosy Angelis and K Tribe series among others.
Among Starck's most famous and successful works is the Juicy Salif juicer, which he designed in 1988 for Alessi. Since then, Juicy Salif has become an undoubted icon. Other popular pieces include the transparent plastic furniture that has become characteristic of Italian Kartell. These include the popular Louis Ghost Chair where a Baroque Louis XV style meets a modern expression in the innovative material. Starck continues to design both everyday products and customized solutions, always with responsibility for the environment and user-friendliness.
