Mats Theselius launches Atlas – new lamp series in a limited edition

Mats Theselius is one of Sweden's foremost designers and the creator of some of our most iconic Swedish furniture classics. He is now launching a numbered and signed lighting series, which will initially only be available in our stores.

The Atlas lamp series is designed by Mats Theselius and produced in a limited edition, signed and numbered by Mats Theselius. The series includes a table lamp, floor lamp, and wall lamp made of stainless steel with a textile cord. The construction is simple, and the material is solid. The design evokes thoughts of Bauhaus. Atlas is produced by Nya Manufaktur, Mats Theselius’ own object production line. All parts are manufactured close to Mats Theselius’ studio and home. For instance, Kirseberg Plåt och Mekaniska in Malmö laser-cut the various lamp parts, while Sundelius in Ystad turned all the screws and nuts.

“It’s both fun and meaningful to take on the role of producer from time to time. You learn a lot from it,” says Mats. “I’m generally interested in the entire production process – everything from small screws and bolts to the bigger picture.”

The name Nya Manufaktur is an abbreviation of Mats Theselius’ Nya Manufakturaffär on Storgatan in Löderup. The property, which primarily serves as the Theselius family’s summer residence, also houses the manufactory shop’s retail space. For the past 25 years, the space has mainly been used for exhibitions but in recent years has also served as a summer shop featuring furniture, lamps, slippers, and other designs by Mats. Mats likens it to a “brand store” for his entire production. The shop has sold furniture and objects from the companies Mats has collaborated with over the years, as well as trial products from his own production of various items and printed materials.

“It actually started because my children wanted summer jobs, so we opened a summer shop. But they lost interest on the very first day, so I’ve mostly run it myself. It might not have been exactly what I had in mind, but it’s been both interesting and enjoyable, especially since I otherwise don’t have direct contact with the people who buy my furniture,” says Mats Theselius.

The Atlas series includes 80 table lamps, 80 floor lamps, and 40 wall lamps/spots. All are signed and numbered from 1–80 and 1–40. The limited edition is available for purchase in our stores in Stockholm, Malmö, and Gothenburg.

NO GA launch three tables by legendary modernist Paul T. Frankl

Paul T. Frankl (1886–1958) designed a series of sofa tables for the Michigan-based Johnson Furniture Company in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The low, biomorphic-shaped tables were sold as  “cocktail tables,” a modernized version of the conventional coffee table. Now three of them - Amoeba, Big foot and Plectrum - are being launched by NO GA in close collaboration with the Paul T. Frankl Estate.
