Throughout design history, pioneering movements and thought patterns have generated new paradigms that have fundamentally changed our behaviour. Now Nordiska Galleriet is launching the Grand Prix chair with patterned cowhide upholstery, a design choice that reflects a transformation in the world of fashion.
Arne Jacobsen worked at a time when previous patterns of thought, design and techniques were being reconsidered. With his functional simplicity, he was a pioneer of Danish modernism and helped put Denmark on the world map as a design nation. Jacobsen's delicate furniture challenged the heavy furniture tradition of the previous century, thanks in large part to his chairs made of layered plywood. The Grand Prix is a very good example of Jacobsen's iconic design. The shell of each chair has been created from nine layers of veneer and two layers of Indian cotton, moulded by bending it into shape over steam. The layered gluing gives the chair's backrest a comfortable flexibility.
The chair was named Grand Prix when it won the Grand Prix award at the 1957 Milan Triennale, the same year it was launched at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in Copenhagen.
The award-winning Grand Prix chair has a graphic edge. With functional simplicity, the backrest has been given a soft y-shape and, like many of Arne Jacobsen's designs, its expression is animistic. So much so that it may even resemble an animal.
The Grand Prix is designed to suit dining groups and its slim design means that the number of chairs can easily be adapted to the size of the party.
As a personalised and shapely solitaire, the Grand Prix Aspen Limited Edition works particularly well with austere, pared-down interiors. With its liberating shape and warmth, it can lift rooms that can be perceived as hard and bare.
In 1912, we opened our shop doors to what would become known as Nordiska Galleriet in the spirit of offering much more than a furniture store. Since then, innovation and ambition have driven us to create something extraordinary for the design-conscious public.
In time for our 110th anniversary, we have decided to launch our latest collaboration with world brand Fritz Hansen in 110 copies. Long live the pioneers.
The Grand Prix Aspen Limited Edition will be released on 21 October in 110 copies globally and is sold exclusively at Nordiska Galleriet, online and in stores.
The iconic Orchestra Chair was originally designed in 1931 by the Swedish architect Sven Markelius, and is now launched by NO GA in close collaboration with the Markelius family. At the same time NO GA also lunch the dining table Nockeby, designed by Markelius for his own house in 1930.

Paul T. Frankl (1886–1958) designed a series of sofa tables for the Michigan-based Johnson Furniture Company in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The low, biomorphic-shaped tables were sold as “cocktail tables,” a modernized version of the conventional coffee table. Now three of them - Amoeba, Big foot and Plectrum - are being launched by NO GA in close collaboration with the Paul T. Frankl Estate.
